Why the ZapShield won

I did not want it to win. A lantern-format zapper from a brand you cannot buy in a hardware store is exactly the kind of product I am usually sceptical of, and the two mains-powered units in this test had far more owner reviews behind them.

What changed my mind was the first weekend. We hung it at the edge of the deck an hour before sunset, ate dinner outside, and nobody swatted. My daughter — the one who scratches until she cries — went to bed without a single fresh bite. That did not happen with the plug-in units, mostly because the plug-in units had to live wherever the extension cord reached, which was never where the mosquitoes actually were.

They do, but only in proportion to how well they attract mosquitoes. Multi-band UV units placed low, sheltered and away from where people sit catch far more than a single-band lamp hung under an eave.

Is a zapper safe around children and pets?
