Start with the space, not the specs
The single most common mistake is buying for voltage. Grid voltage tells you what happens after an insect arrives; it says nothing about whether insects arrive at all. Measure the area you actually sit in — a typical deck is 15 to 25 square metres — and buy for that, not for the whole property.
If you want to protect a seating area, one well-placed unit at the perimeter beats two units flanking the table. Mosquitoes should be intercepted on their way to you.
Wavelengths do the heavy lifting
Single-band UV lamps are excellent at attracting moths and mediocre at attracting mosquitoes. Multi-band emitters widen the response curve across species. If a listing only advertises wattage and voltage and never mentions its wavelength strategy, assume it is a moth trap.
Corded or rechargeable
A mains unit never runs flat, which matters if you want a permanently mounted device over a patio. The cost is placement: your zapper lives wherever the cable reaches, which is rarely the damp shaded corner mosquitoes breed in.
A rechargeable lantern moves. It goes to the fire pit, the tent, the far end of the yard. For most households the placement freedom is worth more than the uptime, provided the battery clears a full evening with margin — look for ten hours or more.
Safety around children and pets
Enclosed lantern cages keep fingers away from the grid and can sit at ground level near a play area. Open-grid mains units should hang above head height. If you have a curious toddler or a dog that noses everything, the enclosure is not a nice-to-have.
Running cost over two seasons
Replaceable UV tubes are the hidden expense. A cheap zapper with an annual bulb replacement can cost more across two summers than a more expensive LED unit with no consumables. Add the bulbs before you compare prices.
Placement checklist
Five to ten metres from where people sit. Knee to waist height. Sheltered from wind. On the side the mosquitoes arrive from — usually the damp, shaded, still-air corner. Switched on an hour before sunset and left running until you go inside.
Do all five and a mid-priced zapper will outperform a premium one hung in the wrong place.
